Journeyman Lineman

Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for a JOURNEYMAN LINEMAN to work in Pahrump, Nevada.

Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120-line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations.  VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).

VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Services Company (VESC), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).

VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.

The Journeyman Lineman completes the construction, conversion, relocation and maintenance of the electrical lines throughout the area served by the cooperative. This position is under the direct supervision of the Area Foreman.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, and completion of at least two years of a certified apprentice program. Must be able to perform hotline work on low and high voltage energized lines and equipment using hot-glove and hot-stick methods. Must be able to show leadership abilities and be knowledgeable on a variety of tasks required for this position.

Knowledge: Must have knowledge of equipment, tools, materials, and services used by electric utilities, and be aware that State and Federal laws relate to construction. Must have some knowledge of the description of units, specifications and drawings for line construction of transmission and distribution voltages; and some knowledge of operating and construction procedures and practices of electric transmission and distribution organizations. Job is structured by detailed task schedules with explicit instructions for each task. Methods and procedures are well-established, and employee does not deviate from these without prior approval. The employee is expected to work with very close supervision during the initial stages of training and moves to work more independently with experience. Work is reviewed while it is in progress, with the supervisor guiding the pace and ensuring that instructions are followed. Must have ability to deal with co-workers and customers in a courteous and professional manner, and have an aptitude for a demonstrated interest in the profession.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several tangible variables in standardized situations. Must be flexible, organized, decisive, and able to take the initiative to carry out problem-solving in standardized situations. Must have the ability to possess a Medic First Aid Card (CPR inclusive). Must obtain and maintain a current commercial driver’s license (CDL) per Nevada State Department of Transportation Regulations. Must have Certification for Fork Lift Operator. Must obtain and maintain an OSHA 30 Construction certification. Must be able to obtain and maintain federal security that satisfies the access requirements of VEA’s federally contracted installations.
