Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for a System Engineer to work at our headquarters located in Pahrump, Nevada.
Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120 line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations. VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).
VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Services Company (VESC), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).
VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.
This position is a senior-level engineering position that reports directly to the Manager of Engineering, with specialized skills, knowledge and responsibility for providing assistance to the Engineering and Operations Department to improve and maintain the transmission and distribution systems’ reliability. This position will also coordinate engineering and technical support with other departments throughout the Cooperative. The System Engineer will also mentor and/or have direct line supervision of other engineers.

Education: Candidate is required to have a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. A Professional Engineering license in the state of Nevada is preferred, but not required.
Experience: Ten years of position related electric utility experience. Progressively responsible experience as an electrical engineer in a distribution utility is required. Also preferred to have transmission utility experience and understanding of electric substations.
Knowledge: This position requires the application of engineering theory and practice in carrying out its responsibilities. Must have knowledge of PSLF or PSS/E power flow and transient stability software: system protection, short circuit and reliability analysis techniques desirable. Knowledge of outage management systems and SCADA systems is required. An understanding of the National Electrical Safety Code and other related regulations is required. Familiarity with NERC standards and NERC operator certification is needed.
Risk Assessment: This position requires access to certain secure assets and information. As a result, individuals in this position must be able to successfully pass a Personnel Risk Assessment every seven years, as required by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards.
Abilities and Skills: Position requires good oral and written communications skills. Must have extensive problem solving skills and be able to organize work to meet deadlines. Must have the ability to work independently, perform the activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the position description and be able to handle and prioritize multiple assignments. Work requires attention to detail and the completion of reports, which require a high degree of accuracy and detail. Ability to supervise and direct work of others. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Nevada Driver's License.
