System Design Technician

Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for an System Design Technician to work at our headquarters located in Pahrump, Nevada.

Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120 line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations.  VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).

VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Services Company (VESC), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).

VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.

The System Design Technician will report directly to the Supervisor of Field and Project Engineering, and requires specialized skills, knowledge and responsibility for assisting with the design of VEA’s distribution system and providing support as needed in the design of the transmission system.  This position will also coordinate with field personnel and provide project support under the direction of the Supervisor of Field and Project Engineering and the System Engineer. Qualifications

Education: A related engineering or technical associate’s degree from a two-year college or university, or experience and training that would satisfy the educational requirements of this position.

Experience: Successful candidate must have previous distribution design or construction experience, or experience with electrical systems and/or graphical design. This position requires the application of technical theory and practice in carrying out its responsibilities. Alternative equivalencies to this experience and education may be considered appropriate and acceptable at the discretion of VEA.

Abilities and Skills: Position requires good oral and written communications skills. Must have the ability to problem solve effectively and organize work to meet deadlines. Must have the ability to work independently, perform the activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the position description. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Nevada Driver's License. OSP Fiber Design experience or willingness to learn OSP Fiber Design. AutoCAD, AUD, & SPIDAcalc experience is preferred.
