Outside Plant (OSP) Technician

Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for a OUTSIDE PLANT (OSP) TECHNICIAN to work at our Pahrump location in Nevada.

Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120 line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations.  VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).

VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Services Company (VESC), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).

VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.

The OSP Technician provides support for the Broadband Construction and Engineering Division of the Broadband Communications Department. This position is responsible for the construction, installation and maintenance of both residential and business OSP FTTx and wireless WiMAX facilities. This position will work with contractors to install fiber-optic cable and conduit, performing troubleshooting and maintenance of the fiber-optic network. The OSP Technician will be responsible for providing technical expertise, strategic planning and recommendations to management for new technologies and network applications in response to business needs. Education and Experience: Must have an associates’ degree in electronics or related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of job related experience, or a combination of education and experience that would satisfy the requirements of this position. Previous experience must include working in the field of OSP FTTx design and installation, including knowledge of construction methods and materials, and wireless technology (Microwave, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, point-to-multipoint, point-to-point).

Knowledge: 4 years’ experience in OSP installation including fiber optic splicing, conduit installation, GPON splitter installation, and fiber optic testing and certification. The candidate must possess outstanding interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and writing skills. The candidate should also possess the following qualities:
a. Ability to make logical and feasible decisions regarding placement of buried, aerial and underground OSP facilities.
b. Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills associated with planning, design and implementation of complicated OSP fiber network infrastructure.
c. Strong written and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex topics to non-technical teams.
d. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook, and the ability to operate other standard office equipment

Abilities and Skills: Must be skilled in human relations to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the job. Must possess good oral and written communications skills to be able to effectively communicate with others. Must have the ability to handle a variety of diverse tasks and organize work to meet deadlines. Must be skilled at project management and team leadership. Must be proficient in the use of personal computers. Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must possess advanced troubleshooting skills. Prefer applicant to obtain and maintain a current commercial driver’s license (CDL) per Nevada State Department of Transportation Regulations.
