Director/Manager of Transmission Services

Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for a Director or Manager of Transmission Services to work in our headquarters located in Pahrump, Nevada. There is one position available, and this position will be filled at either the Director of Transmission Services or the Manager of Transmission Services. This decision will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate and Valley’s business needs at the time of hire.

Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120 line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations.  VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).

VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Utility Services (VEUS), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).

VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.

The Director/Manager of Transmission Services will direct and manage the regional transmission services of the Cooperative to facilitate the contractual requirements, foster relationships, and expand business opportunities related to all aspects of transmission and distribution infrastructure. This position is the primary Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) contact responsible for all aspects of VEA’s transmission-related contractual relationships. Education: Requires a four-year degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, business, or related technical field. Additional specialized training in project or contract management is preferred.


The Manager of Transmission Services applicant would have a general familiarity with a range of transmission-related issues, either a bilateral or RTO energy market framework. A minimum of 7 years of increasingly responsible experience in electric utility systems is required, with experience in related areas of transmission strongly preferred.

The Director of Transmission Services applicant would have a high-level familiarity with transmission-related issues, either a bilateral or RTO energy market framework. A minimum of 12 years of experience in electric utility systems and a minimum of 5 years in a management role in transmission development, contract negotiation, and/or transmission planning is required.

Knowledge: Working understanding of ISO’s, RTO’s, WECC, FERC, and NERC. Thorough working knowledge of power system design, construction, operations, and maintenance specifications and standards is required. Working knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards, both national, state, and local, is also essential. Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and engineering-related information systems is desirable. Other preferred areas of knowledge include the cost of service, retail rate design studies, job training, and safety-related areas.
