Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for an Accountant or Controller to work in our headquarters located in Pahrump, Nevada. There is one position available, and this position will be filled at either the Accountant or the Controller level. This decision will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate and Valley’s business needs at the time of hire.
The Accountant is responsible for applying generally accepted accounting principles to record the business activities of a utility company and its subsidiaries; and will also prepare and analyze financial information and reports that are to be used by management.

The Controller is responsible for providing leadership for the actions of the accounting personnel in completing assigned tasks and applying generally accepted accounting principles to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports that are to be used by management.

Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120-line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations. VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).

Education and/or Experience: A minimum of an associate degree in accounting and minimum of three years of work experience in public utility accounting, accounting or public accounting, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience that would satisfy the requirements of this position. CPA or CPA candidate is a plus.
Other Skills and Abilities: A good knowledge of accounting principles and practices, budgeting methods, insurance, taxes, banking and other financial matters. Working knowledge of all office procedures, equipment, and administrative functions. Knowledge of data processing, information systems and internal accounting controls. Ability to communicate with co-workers, customers and vendors in a professional and courteous manner.
Education/Experience: A bachelor’s degree in accounting and 10 years of experience in public accounting at a management level; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in Utility Accounting, CPA and/or MBA preferred.

Working knowledge of all office procedures, equipment, and administrative functions. Knowledge of data processing, information systems and internal accounting controls. Experience with current cooperative accounting and information systems is highly preferred. Ability to communicate with co-workers, customers and vendors in a professional and courteous manner.
