Board Member Derschan Earns Gold Certification
July 17, 2017 | News |

VEA Board of Directors Member Ken Derschan of Sandy Valley (District 5), recently completed his Gold Credential Certification, the highest level a Board member can receive from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

To earn the Gold Credential, Board members must complete 136 hours of training, covering topics like power grids, power supply, cash flow, by-laws and communications.

As a prerequisite for earning Gold Certification, Board members must also complete courses leading to Cooperative Credential Director and Board Leadership Credential. To maintain Director Gold Status, directors must earn three credits from the NRECA Approved List of Continuing Education Programs with a two-year period from the time their last Director Gold credential was awarded. While time consuming, the course work is essential to understand the complexities required of a Board member, Ken says. “It’s all about serving the members, and to be effective, you have to put in the time in the classroom.”Ken was appointed to the Board of Directors for VEA in August 2015 and in March 2017 was elected by members in District 5 to a three-year term.

It is the goal of all VEA Board members to not only earn all three certifications but to also stay current by taking courses each year offered by NRECA.
