Richard "Rick" Johnson, VEA District 3 Director
Longtime Beatty resident and businessman Rick Johnson was re-elected for a second term to the Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) Board of Directors.
Johnson has been the owner of the El Portal Motel in Beatty since 1988, a business he bought from his father, Harry, who served as VEA District 3 Director from 1984 until he retired from the position in 1997. Rick came to Beatty in 1961 when his father purchased the El Portal Motel and graduated from Beatty High School in 1966.
“I feel I have much to contribute to the board, but also realize I have much to learn as well,” Johnson says. “I am willing to put in the time and energy necessary to educate myself on the responsibilities of a board member and the operations of a major electrical utility.”
Johnson is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science and Biology. After leaving UNR, Rick and his wife, Nancy, moved to Australia for a period of time, where Rick taught chemistry, physics and general science at a Melbourne high school. He also taught general science at Carson City Junior High.
“In addition to operating my business, I also became involved in community affairs,” says Johnson, and has served on the Beatty Volunteer Fire Department, Beatty Ambulance Service, and on the Beatty Water and Sanitation Board of Directors.
